According to Dave, it looks "gorgeous" on the Bold’s screen, and that hopefully the wait won’t be much longer. With several cool new phones from RIM hitting the scene, like the Bold and the upcoming Blackberry Storm, this should be music to any Blackberry-addicted media junkie’s ears. Check out the screen shots over at Zatz Not Funny

Thanks to a VLC plugin created by ChecksumCoder you can now stream your Slingbox output to multiple computers on your LAN. You don’t even need any special programs on the receiving computers and just one program you are serving the video stream from.

Here is how you can do it.

First you need to pick a computer that you will stream your video from, but don’t worry you can also watch your video on the streaming computer at the same time too.

You will need to download and install VLC for Windows. Once installed you need the Slingbox plugin by ChecksumCoder. You can get the file here. It is a Zip file and in it contains the instructions on how to add and set it up for your Slingbox and the plugin DLL file.

Here is how you set it up after you have installed VLC.

Unzip the SlingboxVLC2.zip

Copy libaccess_slingbox_plugin.dll in “C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins”

Start VLC.

Open preferences panel (menu settings, Preferences)

Navigate to “Input/Codecs”, “Access Module”, “Slingbox”

Check “Advanced options” (lower right corner of Preferences panel”

Enter the address, port and password of your Slingbox.

Click Save.

In menu File, select Open Network stream. You should see something like this.

In customize type “sling:”

Click OK

If you have everything setup correctly you should now be watching your Slingbox in the VLC player. If not recheck everything before going to the next steps.

In order to watch your Slingplayer on multiple computers you need to tell VLC to Stream/Save and how to stream the video.

Click on File > Open network Stream, you will see the setup screen above.

Click on the Screen/Save box

The Settings button will now be turned on.

Click on the settings button and a window will open where you can input your settings.

Click on “Play File Locally” This will allow you to watch the Slingbox on your serving computer.

Click on MMSH

Enter the IP address of the computer you are on, the one you are streaming from. In my case its 192.168.0.111. If you don’t know your local machines IP Address you

Right-click the My Network Places icon, and then select Properties.

Double-click the Local Area Connection icon. Occasionally, there will be a number on the end (e.g., Local Area Connection 2); it depends on your computer’s configuration. If you are looking for the MAC address for a wireless adapter, the icon will normally be named Wireless Network Connection.

Click the Support tab.

Click the Details… button.

Select the port. In my case I chose 1235 but in most cases any unused port will do. You normally do not have to open this port in your router because your are only streaming on your local network, not on the internet.

Select the ASF radio button.

Everything should look similar to this.

Now just click OK and the OK again. Wait a second or two and you should be watching your Slingbox again. But this time you can now go to a different computer and watch the same thing.

Just go do a different machine and open up Windows Media Player.

In WMP, select File > Open URL. Type in “mms://” , the IP address of the machine you setup VLC on a colon and and the port number you selected in VLC. So in my case it would be mms://192.168.0.111:1235.

Click ok, wait a minute and you are now watching the same program that you have showing on your other computer!

Here is a photo of it working with a couple of laptops. You will see VLC running the show and Windows Media Player on the same computer watching it and the computer on left is also watching the same show.

Depending on your local network speed and settings you can stream to as many machines that your system will keep up with.

So this brings up the question… Can I stream my Slingbox to the Internet or to a Web Page. The short answer is yes its technically possible, we know because we have done it, but with mixed results.

The long answer is that it depends on your upload speed, your tweaking of the buffer settings on both the VLC player and Windows, How many connections you can support, resolution settings in VLC and other tweaks that would have to be played with and adjusted for best quality.

But if you want to share your program with several computers on the same network it works pretty good.

The next step is putting the stream on your TV. You can do this already if you have a computer that you can hookup to your TV, but with some fancy Windows play-list setups it wold not be too hard to stream to your Tivo or your EVA8000.

Stay tuned for more info on Slinging to the Internet and to your Tivo!

Much of the legwork has involved negotiations between content providers and the company, let by Sling Media Entertainment head Jason Hirschhorn , saying that negotiating with Hollywood has been "a soul-killing, ego-destroying experience." Online video distribution has been adopted slowly by the industry, as networks face the challenge of security, half-baked revenue models, and irregular viewership. One of the more interesting things to come from the discussion is Sling.com’s tie in with the recently launched SlingCatcher , a device that captures and displays Slingbox streams and other media on a television. Hirschhorn indicated thatin the future, SlingCatcher owners will be able to stream video content from Sling.com and their partners directly to their TVs via the SlingCatcher. Putting the puzzle pieces together makes for an obvious conclusion, but Sling hasn’t commented on this particular feature since Jason Hirschhorn spoke with SlingCommunity back in 2007 . How do you follow up to this summer’s smashing "I Kissed a Girl"? The answer is "Hot and Cold", below: I’ve heard this song on the radio a few times, but saw the official video for the first time today. What at first sounds like a kindergarten lesson on antonyms is actually a metaphor for a dude who just can’t make up his mind. I mean, who hasn’t been there, right? Plus, her style is just so hot. The wedding motif may be a nod to Madonna’s "Like a Virgin", which Perry covered in her recent VMA performace. Also check out Katy’s "UR So Gay", which has the Madonna stamp of approval as well; she told Arizona radio hosts JohnJay & Rich that it was her "favorite song right now": The song has garnered some criticism for being homophobic; homosexual periodical The New Gay claims that the combination of her songs "I Kissed a Girl" and "UR So Gay" highlights the negative connotation of "guys kissing is gross, girls kissing is hot" and says, "it’s time to call bulls**t on Katy Perry" and the "tired gay stereotypes" thats he uses in…
Combining professional programming, editorial expertise and social networking features alongside easy and logical navigation," according to the company. While Sling’s e-mail gave no clues as to whether or not Clip+Sling , the long-awaited feature that allows Slingbox owners to clip segments of shows right from their SlingPlayer and share it with others, is included in the early release of the portal. However, Sling Media’s relationships with networks and other content providers should offer a bevy of entertainemnt options at launch. Even more interesting is the inclusion of a web-based SlingPlayer, which will let Slingbox owners connect to and control their home television devices without a separate application installed. Not much is known yet about exactly how it works or what the limitations may be, but having a web-based alternative could be a huge convenience for Slingers. It appears Sling…
The most important of these enhancements impacts new PRO-HD owners. Some users have reported problems setting up the brand new Slingbox PRO-HD with SlingPlayer for Mac OS X. Other Release Highlights: Improved video quality Online Slingbox registration added; plus users can store their Slingbox ID online for easy access Improved Slingbox Setup Assistant: New setup and configuration screens are streamlined and easier to use Users can rapidly cycle between Fullscreen (4:3), Widescreen (16:9), Letterbox, Windowbox, Pillarbox modes Show / Hide player controls with one-click toggle Download SlingPlayer for Mac OS X 1.0.6 from Sling Media
