We came across this statistic and couldn’t believe it!
According to a report by Workers Daily, elementary school and high school students in China need nearly 3 billion copies of textbooks every year, this requires 550 thousand tons of paper, or 11 million trees.
The amazing calculation was made by Zhu Yongxin, a member of China’s top advisory body.
Zhu suggests that students should make the most of every copy of textbooks by recycling them.
We would say so!
China has become the second biggest paper and paperboard consumers, and not many Chinese are aware of the severe pollution caused by papermaking, and its great demand for energy.
Who is the largest paper and paperboard consumer? That would be the U.S.
Total paper and paperboard consumption, in 2006, was 100.2 million tons.
But recycling in 2006 reached a record 53.5 million tons in 2006. So this yielded a recovery rate of 53.4%.
Interesting facts to say the least.
