Beckham is Out

Friday, 31st August, 2007

Beckham is OutWell there goes US Soccer and so much for David Beckham. He is already injured, with a sprained right knee.

He is going to be out at least six weeks, but could return in mid-October, when the Galaxy would have three likely meaningless regular-season games remaining.

Beckham’s inability to play will impact everyone around him. The stadium, the city, the concession stands, the merchandising will all be affected. Also the networks showing the games.

But Brand Beckham - which includes his endorsements for fragrance and apparel - will hold up despite his setbacks.

Beckham’s biggest success has been in moving merchandise and attracting fans.

Initial sales of his No. 23 jersey topped 250,000 and have skyrocketed from there. He gets an undisclosed percentage of every jersey sold, with MLS also sharing in the profits. The Galaxy only makes money if jerseys are bought at its team store at Home Depot Center.

But losing the world’s most famous soccer player impacts more than just the Galaxy, though.

Beckham will miss England’s two Euro 2008 qualifying matches against Israel and Russia in London in early September, and possibly two more in October.

Beckham’s knee injury is the same one he had in February while playing for Real Madrid. He returned in time to help the team win the Spanish League championship and regain his spot on England’s national team.

“I’m staying very optimistic,” he said on his Web site.

New Sports Arena Coming to Vegas

Wednesday, 22nd August, 2007

According to this.

Harrah’s just announced they are going to build a 20,000-seat arena in Las Vegas capable of housing anSports Arena NBA or NHL team. It’s going to be behind the Bally’s and Paris hotel-casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, is projected to open in 2010.

“It just so happens 2010 is an opportune time for an expansion team in Vegas for either or both (leagues),” said Timothy Leiweke, president and chief executive of AEG.NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the arena announcement “positively impacts the prospects of Las Vegas attracting a major-league franchise” but said there was “nothing new to report” regarding league expansion or the NHL’s intentions about a team in Las Vegas.

A key factor in the decision for AEG to build on the Harrah’s site was the “200,000 hotel rooms within walking distance.

Goodman said the deal does not slow down city plans for a proposed $9.5 billion sports arena with casino, retail and residential uses on 85 acres downtown, put forth by Michigan-based REI Group LLC.Any team that wants to locate in Las Vegas could now shop between two large venues for a home, he said.

“With the competition, they’re going to be able to get a better deal,” Goodman said. “So it’s a win-win.”

This is great news. Vegas needs at least one professional sports team. The city is growing by leaps and bounds and this will be a great addition for the residents of Las Vegas and will also be an other venue for the millions of visitors Las Vegas gets every year.

Why Sponsors Should Rely on the Pros

Friday, 10th August, 2007

If you have not heard a NAPA sponsored monster truck performing stunts in front of an auto parts store veered into a crowd of about 100 spectators Thursday, injuring at least nine peoNapa Monster truckple before breaking through a wooden fence and stopping on nearby railroad tracks. You can read about it here.

Also, not too long ago and Funny Car ran into a crowd of people.

I have been involved with many Car and Truck events over the years and the first and foremost object is to keep everyone safe.

I have worked with Robosaurus, Monster Truck Shows, Jet Cars, Top Fuel and even Rock Concerts.
Every time we plan an event we work with a company that knows how to plan the event correctly and put safety first. This means that even if the show could be more exciting, if it’s not safe it doesn’t happen.

If you watch the video you will see there is really nothing between the NAPA truck and the spectators. This should have never happened.

Unfortunaly Monster trucks go out of control, pieces of cars and truck can be flying around and you never know what may happen. I have never had one person get hurt. This is because whatever the cost, safety always comes first.

NAPA will probably get sued and I wouldn’t doubt that laws may be put into affect to stop these kind of “backyard” shows. Unfortunately it will probably affect folks like us, that put on a good show and use the proper safety precautions.

In fact just recently I had Robosaurus in the parking lot of a store, doing a demonstration. There we no less than 5 people dedicated on maintaining safety at all times. We did not have him burn anything because it was not safe to do so there. Ya, it would have been cool, but again, safety first!

You can see the Monster truck news video here.

Jerry Nix, a spokesman for NAPA’s parent company, Genuine Parts Co., said he could not comment.
The city of DeKalb gave the store permission to close the street for the demonstration. DeKalb police would not immediately comment either. I am sure they all are lawyering up!

How does John Daly Do it

Thursday, 9th August, 2007

This week’s PGA Championship is sweltering Southern Hills. The temperature is over 100, with a heat John Dalyindex over 105 degrees.

But, who is in second place after today? None other than John Daly!

This is a surprise because everyone knows what kind of shape he is in.
In fact he said in an interview, “There were odds with all the caddies and players this week who would fall first, me or my caddy”

Daly didn’t even play a single practice hole at Southern Hills this week, preferring instead to loosen up by playing slots at nearby Cherokee Casino.

Daly said he didn’t play a practice round for two reasons: He wanted to avoid the heat or having any expectations. It helps that Daly grew up 2-1/2 hours away in Dardanelle, Ark., so, he’s played a few rounds in this kind of weather in his day. Still, how did he handle Thursday’s oppressive weather? “I light up a cigarette and drink some caffeine, and it actually works,” he said.

Daly’s foibles have been well-chronicled: the gambling addiction that he admits has cost him millions of dollars, as well as two seven-figure endorsement deals; the three failed marriages; his alcoholism; his current wife, Sherrie, spending time in jail this year on a federal money laundering charge. If he can somehow remain in contention the next three days, it may be one of the biggest moments in a sports year filled with unprecedented drama.

Can Daly win this championship? Heck, he doesn’t even know if he’ll make the cut.

“I don’t know how well I’ll play the next day — or three days, hopefully,” he said.

You gotta love this kind of stuff! I don’t know about you, but we will be TiVo’ing the Championship and Slinging it as needed.

Was Donaghy Afraid He Would Get Wacked?

Monday, 23rd July, 2007

donaghyIf you follow any sports news, you know that the FBI is investigating NBA referee Tim Donaghy for allegedly betting on games he officiated during the last two seasons.

Now there is news that authorities are examining whether the referee made calls to affect the point spread because he had a gambling problem and was approached by low-level mob associates through an acquaintance, a official said.

We may never know the whole truth, but someone like that would make it easy for organized crime or gambling to approach and have them referee a game in their favor, to cover a particular bet or points spread.

Not only would you threaten their career by exposing them, but with all the big money involved in gambling I wouldn’t be surprised if they used other, personal threats too.

There are all kinds of rumors and news floating out there right now about this, like:

  • He’s now receiving death threats and his family wants him in the witness-protection program.
  • They think he will be killed if he goes to prison, or even if he doesn’t, just because he’s probably talking, cooperating, and that’s ratting on the mob.
  • Other sources say that Donaghy will be naming other supposedly crooked individuals affiliated with the NBA.
  • According to this article, the NBA had a private investigator digging into Donaghy’s gambling habit more than a year ago but let him keep his job.
  • Point spreads changed to much right before game time.
  • Did Donaghy and crew fix Game 3 of the epic Suns/Spurs series?

Watch this YouTube Video and you can see this persons review of the officiating.

Hard to determine the truth right now, but this is yet another black mark on the NBA. They are already losing audience ratings.
Clearly, this will not end well for Donaghy. David Stern is supposed to address this publicly tomorrow. So we will watch the saga continues.
