My First iPhone Encounter

The BC Blog is proud to announce another addition to the Bc Blog Team. Meet Osu16ou13!
For some background I currently have 5 Cingular/AT&T phones that I move my SIM card between. A Motorola SLVR (won from Pepsi) Siemens SX66 (WM2003 but has a great huge screen and WiFi), 2125 (probably my least favorite although it’s pretty small, no WiFi), Nokia E62 (Nice to use but an odd shape, thin but wide, slow CPU, no WiFi), and my 8525 (decent size, WiFi, 3G, WM6, etc..) I also have a Sprint PPC6700 that’s my work phone.
Here is his post…
So I hadn’t really thought much about the iPhone. In the back of my head I would probably buy one for $300-400 but not more.
A long time ago I worked in IT and was a Windows guy.
I had to work on Macs because I worked for a school district that had them for teacher computers. Our labs were all PCs and that was my deal.
I’ve pretty much been a PC guy since..

So tonight I’m sitting at a bar in Columbia, SC eating dinner (Wild Hare in Irmo, great wings, cheap beer), and a guy sits down next to me, orders a beer and pulls out his iPhone. He barely got started with it and my curiosity got the better of me.
I asked him how he liked it, etc. and had it in my hands in maybe 30 seconds.
It’s pretty cool, I had to ask him about apps rotating automatically and a few general operational things.
I also showed him something about Windows Live If you’ve played with the satellite photos, pull up Matthews, NC.
They’ve got the closest zoom I’ve found so far. It looked awesome on the iPhone. It was funny that it uses Windows Live. Is that the default?
Then I pulled out my 8525.
Of course the first thing I showed him was Sling Player. He asked if he could get it on his iPhone.. .nope ![]()
Then I brought up something about how AT&T’s service was a lot faster in Columbia than it is in the Charlotte area.
I had him go to broadbandreports.com/mspeed and he only got about 119kbit/sec while I was getting about 823kbit/sec. It took me a minute to remember the iPhone only has EDGE.. I do only get around 500kbit/sec in Charlotte and 250kbit/sec at home in Mooresville.
When I told him I paid $200 for my refurbished 8525 and he said he paid $800 for his 8GB on Ebay he laughed a little uncomfortably.
On Apple’s side, it is very responsive, screens (I wanted to say windows) flow much smoother and faster than my PPCs. I’d be interested to see if it needs to be rebooted as often as my PPCs..
I make fun of the iPhone but I would love to have one at the right price..
